Wow, this has been a wild month! With inventory, quarterly taxes, starting teaching for a new art school, First Friday Art Shows, and dealing with my foster dog, I don't know where the time went. Here are a few of the creations I made this month on top of the madness....Enjoy!

Magellan

This year for the holiday season, my husband and I decided to spread some cheer by fostering a dog that would have otherwise been put to sleep. We named him Magellan, and call him Gelly. He's only been with us a short while, but he's warmed up quickly, and we're helping to train him so that he can find a forever home. Here are a few pics of his first few days as he was getting accustomed to our family (and our Delica was getting accustomed to him ;) Please consider fostering, adopting, or volunteering to help the furry ones who cannot help themselves. We bought this huge dog bed for Gelly, and her royal highness Delica took it over immediately. She figures that, as the alpha dog of the house, she should have her pick...he didn't seem to mind.

Gelly seemed to never have played with toys before, so we bought him a few for 'big dogs', and instead he took over all of Delica's little plushy toys! We call this the Gelly Dragon Hoard. He literally collected all of the toys he could find and brought them to this futon to keep an eye on ;)

If you follow me at all, you already know that I own a bead shop and, contrary to popular belief, I don't only make jewelry there! I create everything from wearable art, to car ornaments, to home decor, and will crystallize just about anything if given half a chance. The past few weeks have been filled with customer requests that simply MUST be done before Christmas. In turn, I have managed to churn out quite a few unexpected pleasures lately. Sometimes I even amaze myself ;) Here are a few of the many that will inevitably make it onto this blog.....Enjoy!

Mini Crystal Chandelier. Commissioned for a customer's friends' Christmas tree, but I want one for my car in a bad way. At least I know where to get one ;)

A vintage lucite flower with Crystal-studded ball, chain, and Antiqued Silver pewter wing on a pre-existing chain.

Simple, but sweet, this little finding was personalized with the family's birthstones in Swarovski Crystal, then added to a simple noodle chain. I'm kind of in love with it ;)

As I woke up this morning, I realized that tomorrow is December, and I have little in my blog to show for the month of November. It has been a hectic month, filled with instruction writing for magazines, an unexpected re-vamp of my website, and a somewhat poor attempt to bring my Etsy sales back from the grave. Enhancing the Hot Dog (or how to make a store-bought costume Sparkle!)

This year was my first Halloween with my tiny dog Delica, so I wanted to make sure she was decked out. I simply didn't have the time to make her a costume in time, so I went in search of a store-bought one. I wasn't as impressed as I had hoped. I wanted a Tinkerbell costume that didn't have Angel wings instead of fairy wings, and I thought I could put together a Peter Pan outfit to match. I never found one. I saw a Headless Horseman costume that looked like it was 'riding' the dog, but no one had one in her size.....then I went in to a Petco, and saw the Hot Dog. I know it's a cliche', but when she's bad I tell her that I'm going to eat her on a bun with mustard, and this costume had mustard, so I was forced right? The only problem was that the only one they had left in her size had the velcro practically ripped off of it...or at least it would have been a problem if I wasn't the 'crafty' type ;).

So I took the broken item up to the counter, told them the issue, and asked for a discount (I rarely do this, but I wanted the damn thing so bad). To my surprise they offered me a 50% discount, so I got the base for $10....SCORE!

I decided that I needed to 'chick' up my hotdog a bit by first glittering the mustard squiggle:

Then covering the 'seeds' on the bun with Swarovski Crystal flatbacks just for good measure:

And what I ended up with was a cute, relatively inexpensive costume that was comfortable for her to wear, and warm to boot! Plus, it put a smile on my face, and everyone else who saw her that day. Happy Halloweener everyone ;)

Halloween, and other things...

Many of you may remember that I got married on Halloween a few years ago. Why? Because I love Halloween! That, and my husband will never, ever forget our anniversary. Usually this is the time of year that I dress up as whatever wild thing, and post pics of the party I wore it to, but this year I'm not even going to a party. In fact, my husband and I will spend the Saturday night before Halloween at a casino likely wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and comfortable shoes. I can't leave you without a Costume fix, however, so head over to my friend Vanessa's Blog to see her numberous costumes featured in her Fated to Pretend contest which she mostly put together out of her own closet! Inspiration

My recent trip to North Carolina to teach at the famous Beadlush brought me a little inspiration. My friend Michelle was making the Spirograph Pendants a'la Lisa Niven Kelly for the bridesmaids at her sister's wedding and, last minute of course, her sister wanted one for her hair. This posed a dilemma because of the weight, but Michelle tried to glue it with WeldBond, and several other things. In the end, I attached it to Lacy's Stiff Stuff, and inserted the hairpin (with glue pad) in between the Lacy's and the Microsuede backing, then beaded around the edge to secure it. I topped it off with a 'serrated' edge to match the cogs in the base of the pendant, and Voila! She eeez done!

I made these Candy Corn Pendants out of Polymer Clay, but had to fashion my own 'cookie cutter' because all the commercial ones I found were waaayyyy too big for what I wanted them for. I used Diamond Glaze to make the glitter stripes (which was a bit of a PITA), and then used several coats of Ice Resin to top it off. I am very pleased with the outcome I must say, what do you think?

Aristocrats (1999)

Description: With characters, drama, and romance vivid enough for a masterwork of fiction, this story is all the more fascinating because it is true. Based on Stella Tillyard's acclaimed biography that "made history sexy again" (London Sunday Times), it paints an intimate portrait of 18th-century upper-class life in England and Ireland through the eyes of four beautiful high-born sisters. Caroline, Emily, Louisa, and Sarah Lennox were great-granddaughters of a king, daughters of a cabinet minister, and wives of politicians and peers. Well-educated, strong-minded, and distinctly individual, they take charge of their own lives, tempting scandal with their unconventional ideas about love, marriage, education, and fidelity.

What I like: You all know my weakness for period dramas, and this one is no exception. It centers around the infamous Lennox sisters who were 5 daughters of Charles Lenox, 2nd Duke of Richmond, who live a charmed life with not only plenty of money, but with parents who actually love eachother, which was an oddity at the time. The gowns and jewels outshine even the sumptuous scenery in this story of intrigue and scandal. It's one of the longer Masterpiece Classics, running nearly 5 hours in 3 parts, but I found the whole storyline enjoyable, with little 'down time'.

Take the Lead (2006)

Description: Inspired by a true story, Antonio Banderas stars as internationally acclaimed ballroom dancer Pierre Dulane in the energetic and moving film Take The Lead. When Dulane volunteers to teach dance in the New York public school system, his background first clashes with his students' tastes...but together they create a completely new style of dance.

What I like: Alright, I'll admit it: I love Antonio Banderas. Oh you do too? I probably could have guessed that. ;) He does a great job of playing a shy, yet talented ballroom dance instructor, and the scene where he 'shows' the students the tango is not to be missed. Don't we all wish we could dance like that? I admit, that the actual background stories of the kids could have almost been completely cut out in favor of more dancing, but there are plenty of dance scenes present, so we'll forgive them trying to add in more 'plot'.

First Annual Denver County Fair

I am pleased to announce that my Butterfly Garden Necklace won the First Place Blue Ribbon for Jewelry Design in the Fashion Pavilion at the Denver County Fair!

While I'm both humbled and ecstatic about the win, I didn't win nearly as many ribbons as my friend Julianna of Julianna's Wardrobe who won the Third Place Ribbon in the Jewelry Design Category, as well as both First and Third Place Ribbons in the Costume Design section! Go team!

Great B&B Finds

I finally got some pictures of my favorite things that I brought back from B&B for the shop! Sorry it took so long...

Jewel Beetle Wings....no really. Laura McCabe used these a few years ago in a necklace, and I've been in love with them ever since. Tara and I are working out ways to use them now. We know that we can put holes in them, but we're also thinking about encasing them in resin.

Bullet Casings. Can you say Steampunk? These little beauties have been everywhere from belts to bangles, and everything in between since Steampunk became popular. I want to tumble them to a high shine, and add Swarovski for a Steampunk Glam look.

Sparkle Balls! I admit that I avoided these like the plague for a while. Why? I guess I didn't want to appear too cliche' in the way of sparkle. I already make some sparkle balls myself and didn't know if buying them ready made made me look lazy. Methinks I'll be able to get away with it ;)

Pearls in fabulous shapes, colors, and sizes. I love pearls. Adore them. Some of these colors just spoke to me, and I even ended up with really small and really big in the name of equality. What will I do with them? Likely stare at them until something jumps out at me like I usually do. I kind of hoard them really....

B&B The Shopping Commences....

Last year I didn't get a chance to really shop much, so this year I left open the whole weekend for it! I still didn't get through all of it, but I feel I did alright. The first thing I did was open a store account for Ice Resin. I can't say enough good things about this product. It's easy to use, you can encase high near anything in it, and it dries to a glassy finish. Me and the girls can't wait to get it into the shop to make fabulous stuff.

Next, I found the Crystal Clay booth which was manned (or womanned) by Kellie DeFries aka the Crystal Ninja, and Swarovski Ambassador Stephanie Dixon, not to mention the wonderful owner Debra Saucier.

I bought the clay, the crystals, and the bezels, and even got a picture of their Crystallized cash register. Yeah, I've gotta make me one of these.

Should it be plain Crystal, or Crystal AB? Decisions, decisions.....

B&B Day Two...

Thursday dawned bright and ridiculously early for those taking classes at Bead&Button. The weather had dropped 30 degrees by the morning to settle somewhere in the low 50's, with an impressive wind that only served to tangle ones hair. I was set to take my first metal-working class where I would learn how to cut out a skeleton key shape from a sterling silver sheet with a saw boasting a blade so small that it would take you ten minutes to hack through a stick of warm butter with it. On practically no sleep, I set to the task.

I glued, I sawed, I patina'd, and even learned to make my own headpins with a little ball on the end with a torch (yeah, they gave me sharp objects AND a torch....they don't know me very well do they?). And what did I have to show for it at the end? A skeleton key....no really. I actually made one. It ain't perfect, but it's passable, and was great for a start. I even finished the project 3 hours early, and stopped by the hotel for a little nap before the big shopping preview that evening. How's that for resourcefulness?

Bead&Button the first day...

Shannon and I got in very late on Tuesday, and it was still 80 degrees and extremely humid. That didn't change on Wednesday, our first full day at the show. The humidity was high, and the temperature was near 90, not to mention the extreme wind. That evening, we took Melissa Grakowski's Sinusoidal Necklace, and this is about how far we got:

Melissa is an extremely talented beadworker who was super fun to be in class with. I highly recommend that you take from her if you get a chance.

That evening was the Meet the Teachers reception. It's basically the place that all the teachers show off their classes, and sell their newest kits. This year there was a swag bag sponsored by Swarovski that had a lot of the following in it:

B&B Preparations

Preparations for the Bead&Button Show in Milwaukee start for me today (okay, they sort of started yesterday, but you get the point). All my most fabulous jewelry is being packed, clothes are being washed and sorted (yes, this is coming with me, no this is not), and I'm gathering my arsenal of beading tools to accompany me. What's in the bag? Mainly beading needles, fireline, medical tape, bead mats, a triangle tray, and more than one Ott Light.

As I learned my first year, if you want to bead at The Gathering Place (a pretty much 24 hour a day beading area) you need to bring a project or two....A PROJECT OR TWO ladies, otherwise, you'll never get anything done. This year I'm debating between taking THE Bag, and a cuff bracelet that I've almost finished, and a pair of sort of 'secret' earrings that I've been working on that came up missing, but I'm sure I could begin again, and THE Bag. Still not sure.

I've promised myself that I will try to treat this as a 'real' vacation this year, so I'm not really helping out at friend's booths or anything. Just me, the beads, and maybe a massage or two ;) Wish me luck!

Bead&Button Show 2011

Those of you who follow my Facebook page are probably sick of hearing about it, but I'm heading to the Bead&Button Show in Milwaukee,WI next Tuesday for 5 days where I do nothing but eat, drink, sleep, and bead. I'll be taking two classes there: The Sinusodial Necklace with Melissa Grakowski,

and Multilayered Skeleton Key with Robyn Cornelius, Andrea Haukedal.

The rest of my time will be spent beading in the 24-hour gathering place in the Hyatt, and hanging out with my bead friends from all over the world. I'll keep you posted as neat things arise, so make sure to check back often :)

Sense of Fashion

Alright, so most of you who know me are aware of my serious lack of fashionable clothing. Most days I roll out of bed 45 minutes before I have to be at work, take the dog out, shower, throw on whatever clothing that looks reasonably un-wrinkled, put on some half-assed make-up and I'm out the door (often 5 minutes late). That being said, I love to look at fashionable people. One of my guilty pleasures is watching Project Runway, and America's Next Top Model....never the current shows, but still.

I stumbled across SenseoFashion.com wandering around the other day, and I can't stop looking at it. They have more skirts and dresses that I want (and would buy, and would never wear, and would feel bad for buying), not to mention shoes, accessories, and the like. A lot of it is vintage, or is made by smaller designers. Some of the items are one-offs, or only come in sample sizes (which I can't fit into), but I've loved looking around it.

Bead Unique Feature...times 2!

So, one day a couple months ago, I get this email. It's from Joanna Feller (the Managing Editor of Bead Unique Magazine), and she's asking me to be part of their Bead Challenge feature. This is a cool feature. The idea is that they send you and 3 other people the same or very similar item, and you use your own bead stash to create something out of it, and send it back within a few weeks. You can't turn something like that down, so I say yes, and a couple weeks later, I get a package in the mail containing a HUGE clear acrylic cabochon with a decal of a butterfly on it. Those of you who know me know that I don't usually work with acrylic. If plastic even comes into play in my work, it's Vintage Lucite, or Bakelite. The color of the butterfly was blue and black, but the blue was unlike anything I had in my private collection, let alone my bead shop, so I set out to order beads to match online....easier said than done since computer monitors can vary color so much.

I decided on a white background for my cab, and gilt-lined white opal seed beads for the main necklace color. There was a bright gold flourish on either side of the butterfly, so I thought that a brassy victorian gold might work, and it did. I fleshed out the pallette with a few blue Delica beads, and a discontinued Swarovski color named White Opal Sky Blue which is a milky blue on one side, and the equivalent of Swarovski Jetnut on the other. I had the beads, now what was I going to do with them?

The cab was so large, that it pretty much ruled out a bracelet, or barrett, so I had to choose between a necklace, or an impressive belt buckle...I decided on necklace. I surrounded the cab with Peyote Stich, edged it with Brick Stitch, and added a Picot edging to create a lacy look. It needed some substance, so I chose to add a heavily embellished Peyote strip on either side, connected to the cab with several rows of Right Angle Weave to add a feminine touch. I realized pretty immediately that I couldn't make the whole necklace with the embellishment (it would look WAY too heavy), so I opted for 4 strips of the heavily embellished Peyote linked with triple strung strands to lighten the load.

After the necklace was done, I realized that the cab needed something because it wasn't drawing my eye down. After a little debate (and a little confirmation by my husband), I added the fringe. I was amazingly happy with the results. I'm considering kitting this one eventually (you know, when I have a moment of spare time ;).

The Butterfly Garden Necklace is pictured in the June 2011 issue of Bead Unique Magazine on page 34. By some miracle, my Hammered Teardop Earrings also appear in this issue on page 38. Thanks to everyone who has given their opinions, and support to me to make it possible for me to continue to be published in a national magazine; I appreciate it more than you could know. And where do I go from here? The skies' the limit baby!

I admit, I was having a hard time letting the Gypsy go. I sold my finished jewelry under that name for years, and my Etsy shop was relatively well-known. The problem really came when I realized how hard it was to sell under my new name and still be selling online under my old name. No one understood that we were the same company essentially. So after much debate, and a few tears, I decided to merge the two into The Peacock Shop which will allow me to expand more easily than Gypsybeads.

I thank you all in advance for bearing with me while we transition into a single entity. It may take a few weeks to fully integrate, but it'll be worth it in the end ;)

The Young Victoria (2009)

Dominated by her possessive mother and her bullying consort,Conroy, since childhood, teen-aged Victoria refuses to allow them the power of acting as her regent in the last days of her uncle, William IV's rule. Now eighteen, the British royal Victoria (Emily Blunt) ascends to the throne and is romanced by future husband Prince Albert (Rupert Friend) in this lush period film that chronicles the early years of the British monarch's larger-than-life reign. Produced by Martin Scorsese and Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, the Oscar-nominated film also stars Miranda Richardson as the Duchess of Kent, Jim Broadbent as King William, and Paul Bettany as Lord Melbourne.

This film really shows the stuggles of this young (and longest reigning) monarch in both her personal and professional life. The costuming is lovely, but pay particular attention to the crowns and jewels (of course ;).

The Madness of King George (1994)

The dementia of King George III -- the English monarch who lost the war to keep the American colonies -- ignites a flurry of political and familial treachery in this comical biopic that earned Nigel Hawthorne and Helen Mirren a pair of Oscar nods. Based on Alan Bennett's play, the film provides insight into the primitive medical practices of the time and co-stars Ian Holm, Rupert Graves and Rupert Everett.

Helen Mirren is incomparable as Queen Charlotte who boasted 14 children of her husband King George III. Needless to say, the costuming is beautiful. The big hairdos and the dresses that come out 3 feet from the hip are particularly interesting (and accurate). Iam Holme is fantastic as the doctor who is determined to 'cure' the King, and Rupert Everett is hilarious as the dowdy Prince of Wales who is bent on usurping the throne.

My friend Julianna (of Julianna's Belly Moves) has the most endearing little girl named Olive who attends a local Montessori School. When she announced that they needed donations for their fundraiser, I was happy to send something her way. I chose the olive-colored beads for obvious reasons, and the fuschia because it is Julianna's signature color. When pressed to name the art piece on the school's form, the first thing that came to mind is Olive's Garden, but that didn't work for obvious reasons, so I went with Aberle which is Julianna's Maiden name, and the inspiration was kind of a family affair ;)

Let me say, first and foremost, that I love my dictionary and thesaurus, and I even like Dictionary.com and Thesaurus.com, and use them often. That being said, it is a rare event that I have no idea what a word means, at least at its base.

While reading A Dangerous Affair by Caro Peacock,

I came across the word 'Syllabub' which was central to the plotline. Now, I could discern from the text that it involved cream, and likely a hefty dose of liquor, and was correct in my assumption, but I just had to look it up to make sure. Here is what Dictionary.com tells us:

Syllabub:
noun

1. a spiced drink made of milk with rum, port, brandy, or wine, often hot
2. ( Brit ) a cold dessert made from milk or cream beaten with sugar, wine, and lemon juice
3. a dessert of beaten cream that is thickened with gelatin, sweetened, and flavored with wine or liquor.

So there's your new word for the week! Hope you like it ;)

What did I think of the book? I was excited to read a novel about Victorian England, but I admit I was a bit disappointed in what I hoped would be a strong heroine. It seemed as if the plot was thrown together at the end...of course, I was reading an advance copy, so maybe some things changed in the end. It was a lovely idea, but doesn't prompt me to bother reading the rest of the series.

Fuschia Bat Necklace

This is the necklace that I am donating to Belly Dancing for Bats, a benefit to raise money to support research to support research to stop White Nose Syndrome, a horrible disease that is killing millions of bats annually. I created the centerpiece using polymer clay covered in black glitter. The Fuschia Swarovski Crystals dangle from a Silver-plated swag chain. The necklace measures 16" with a 2" extender chain for a total of 18 inches.

Waking Ned Devine (1998)

When Ned Devine dies from shock after winning the lottery, two longtime friends, Micheal and Jackie, discover the body and agree Ned would want them to benefit from his good luck. They embark upon an outrageous scheme to claim the ticket but first they have to get all the townsfolk to go along with their plan!

It really doesn't get any funnier than this! This movie is very much in the vein of Last of the Summer Wine with the little old men being michief-makers, and the women trying to clean up after them. It won more awards than you can shake a stick at including Best Feature.

My favorite line:
Jackie O'Shea: And don't take it personally, Finn, but I bought you some expensive, fruity soaps. Take them home, try them out.

The Secret of Roan Inish (1994)

Following the death of her mother, young Fiona (Jeni Courtney) is sent to live with her grandparents on the Irish coast across from Roan Inish, the island where her family once lived. She's told stories about the selkies--seals that can turn into humans--who have been connected with Fiona's family over the ages. At first she's not sure if the selkies are real or mythological, but she later realizes that they hold the key to reclaiming her family heritage.

This is one of those heart-warming movies that just gets you. I love the fantasy aspect, as they treat it like truth. The little girl is endearing, and the beauty of the scenery cannot be denied.

Update on The Bag

It's been a while since I posted a pic of The Bag, so I thought I'd show you what I've been up to. It looks like I don't have far to go with this piece, but there's more to it than you would think. After I finish this piece, I have at least 2 more embroidered pieces, and then likely some free-form netting for the sides. I have decided to add some kind of short lift (like a stud) to the bottom so that that beadwork doesn't get marred when you put it down.

My New Delica

Many of you are aware that, for some time now, I've been looking for a forever friend to travel between work and home with me. With my husband out of town, I had to make extra sure that I found a friend who could really fit in with me and my shop. Yesterday, while surfing Craigslist for the umpteenth time, I came across my new best friend: a 6 month old, 3-1/2 lb Min Pin who was named Stella. She had been purchased as a companion for the family's 9 year old Boston Terrier who promptly let the family know that she didn't like the Min Pin. And I watched this in action, that Boston was a definite Diva, and actually picked on the much smaller Stella.

After spending some time with her, I decided to take her home, and rename her Delica....she is so tiny afterall. So here she is, making her blog debut.....Delica!

Great Movies to Bead by....Forbidden Love Edition

Persuasion (1995)

I love most of the Jane Austen remakes from this era, but this one holds a special place in my heart. Anne Elliot (Amanda Root) is both adorable and endearing. When placed next to her ridiculous sisters, pompous father, and grasping extended relatives, she's a complete saint!

Her love for Captain Wentworth (Ciarán Hinds) runs long and deep even though her family had deemed it an unsuitable match 10+ years ago. When the Captain moves back to the area after a long and successful stint at sea, her world is turned upside down.

Does he still lover her? Will her family let them marry now that he's rich? She's much too modest to ask, and practically elopes in the end.

My favorite quote of the movie? "If I may, so long as the woman you love lives, and lives for you, all the privilege I claim for my own sex, and it is not a very enviable one - you need not covet it, is that of loving longest when all hope is gone." Anne Elliot.

Dirty Dancing (1987)

This movie will always be on my list of romantic movies to watch. Johnny Castle (Patrick Swayze) is a sexy dance instructor from the wrong side of the tracks who longs to shake things up a bit on the dance florr, and Frances 'Baby' Houseman (Jennifer Grey), the younger daughter of a doctor who is expected to go to college to join the peace corp. The two meet at a resort where he's teaching the Mambo to the rich crowd. The sparks fly, when she offers to fill in for a dancer who's gotten herself into some 'trouble' with a guy, but they're shut down when her father finds out.

I love the story, I love the dancing, and who can forget THE line 'Nobody puts Baby in the corner'? I know I never will. There's a surprising lack of 'dirty' dancing in the movie considering its namesake, but we'll forgive that in favor of the water scene ;)

Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998)

After the death of her beloved father, Danielle De Barbarac (Drew Barrymore) becomes a servant in her own home, waiting on her step-mother, the Baroness Rodmilla De Ghent (Anjelica Houston) and step-sisters (Melanie Lynskey and Megan Dodds) hand and foot. Years pass, and the estate which once afforded a high living, has now been reduced to a practically fallow state thanks to ill-management on the part of the Stepmother. When one of the other servants gets sold off to pay for a debt, Danielle 'borrows' her step-sisters' clothing and sets off to save him. When Prince Henry (Dougray Scott) happens upon her attempt to barter for the servant, she's caught in a lie that leads to a whole string of lies that she can't untangle. The big problem? The Prince is looking for a wife, and she's at the top of the list, as long as the truth doesn't come out.

Leonardo DaVinci makes an appearance as a guest of the Prince, and a band of Gypsies rounds out the antics when they're invited to the ball.

Anjelica Houston plays a fabulous villainess, and Drew Barrymore is appropriately charming. You even come to like one of the step-sisters, who is a disappointment to her mother.

Action, a little adventure,beautiful gowns and jewelry, and a star-studded cast....how can you miss?

First piece in the new shop!

The weather outside has been very bipolar. One day, it's sunny and 50, the next, it's below zero and snowing. Welcome to Colorado ;)

I had a great opening week in the new shop seeing both old and new customers alike. I barely had time to do anything extra that wasn't pricing, bagging, tubing, etc, but I got the chance on Friday to set everything else aside, and just bead. Here's what I came up with:

I love them. No, really. I had a great time wearing them the next day, and I may wear them every day for the next month or so....or longer.
I can't decide what to call them though. I posted the question on Facebook, and my friends came up with a ton of great ideas including (but not limited to): Mystic Cascades, several variations on Orion Cascades (but I already have a pair named Orion ), Constellation, Shooting Stars, Trifecta in Crystals...the list goes on and on. My friend Julianna of Julianna's Wardrobe thought that they reminded her of often-sparkly woman who does Aerial Hoop performances, so I looked up different names for that, and found that Lyra and Cerceau refer to the performance, and both literally mean 'hoop'. I kind of like Cerceau, but I'm still debating. What do you think?

My Shop is Expanding!

I'm so excited to be expanding my little bead shop into its second storefront this week! It's gone from a table in the corner of my bead room, to a seasonal kiosk, to its first tiny storefront, and now to a storefront twice that size. We're going places, and I'm so grateful for all of my wonderful friends and customers who have helped me come this far! Thank you!

2010 The Year in Review

2010 was a big year for me. I took my seasonal kiosk and expanded into my first storefront location.

I made it to the Bead&Button Show's 10 Year Anniversary, and had a great time!

I had my Medallion Bracelet appear in Bead Unique Magazine (my first project to appear in a national magazine)

And just before the year ended, I got the good news that I would be able to move into the shop next door which is twice the size of the one I'm in now, so it was a great year overall :). Thanks to all of you who came to the shop, commented on my blog, and kept me sane over this past year; I hope that 2011 is even more fabulous for all of us!

Great Movies to Bead by...Holiday Edition

Emmet Otter's JugBand Christmas (1977)

The Story: Emmet and Ma Otter live along the river in a tiny shanty. Ma washes and mends neighbors' clothes for money, and Emmet does odd jobs around town with his late Pa's old tool chest. When the opportunity comes to enter a talent contest that offers a large cash prize, both Ma and Emmet enter hoping to win the money and buy the other what they most desire. Will one of them win the contest and save the holiday? Watch and see ;)

What I like: Based on the holiday favorite Gift of the Magi, this Jim Henson movie is a lost gem. This is another one leftover from my childhood. When it came out on VHS, I had to snap it up! Kermit the frog makes and appearance as the narrator and, of course, he's my favorite Muppet. The fantastic band of 'bad guys', The Riverbottom Nightmare Band, are appropriately hilarious, and may have been spoofs of popular musicians of the 60's and 70's. The gift of the Magi has always been one of my favorite holiday stories, and this version doesn't fail to deliver, and even allows children to understand that what matters at Christmas isn't 'stuff' but family.

Little Women (1994)

The Story: The Marches, once a fine and noble family, have fallen on lean times. The mother (Susan Sarandon) does her best to clothe, feed, and educate her daughters while her husband is away at war, and her efforts get her four young women who know their minds and aren't bent on 'frivolous' things. The eldest daughter Meg (Trini Alvarado) is bent on marriage, next in line, Jo, is destined to be a writer, the third daughter Beth (Claire Danes) is happiest at home, and the (Winona Ryder) youngest and fairest, Amy (Kirsten Dunst), is sure that she'll make a rich match. When handsome Laurie (Christian Bale) shows up next door, the Marches know their lives will never be the same. They have their ups, they have their downs, but what they really have is eachother.

What I like: By now, you are all aware of my love for period films. I love the costuming, the manners, and the thought of a 'different time', but most of all I love the sense of family that this film imparts. Like Jo, I do wonder what it would be like to be Belle Gardner with 10 pairs of gloves and 5 marriage proposals. Not that I'm not happy with the one I ended up with, but it never hurts to dream ;) I can't keep away from any movie that involves a strong woman, and this movie has at least 5 of them! Throw in a dose of hottie Christian Bale, and dark and mysterious Gabriel Byrne, and I'm sold.

I will be the first to admit that Christmas kind of snuck up on me....okay, it totally ambushed me in broad daylight while I was looking straight at it, but you get my point.

On top of this being my first holiday season in my shop, I had 3 shows in the first couple weeks of December. Two of the shows were in one day, with the first being at my shop, and the an evening show with Raqs Nova for their Troupe Show. Needless to say I was exhausted at the end of it all.

I taught a couple Free Demos with inexpensive kits available to go with them: one a Leather and Lampwork Bookmark, and the other my Queen of Hearts Snowflake Ornament. (you'll see them pop up in my Etsy shop soon ;)

I even managed to find some time to craft some Disco Ball Rings for the TribalTique Funky Town Show.

And I created something else that I can't show you until I get a chance to show it to the person it's intended for ;)

Other than that it's been a very quiet holiday season for me with my husband out of town, and my Assistant Tara visiting her family. I had 3 whole days off in a row which is unheard of, so I was thankful for that, and I'll have another 3 coming for New Years too. I hope that you all of your Holidays were both Merry and Bright, that you got everything you wanted, and made everything you intended to (unlike me ;). Merry Christmas everyone!

Great Movies to Bead by....

I'm not sure how I missed getting this out in November, so you'll get a double dose of GMTBB this month!

Sweet Home Alabama (2003)

The Story: Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon) has it all. She is a fabulous up and coming fashion designer who has just nailed her first major fashion show and she has just become engaged to the most eligible bachelor in New York City (Patrick Dempsey). What's the problem then? Well, for starters, her name is really Melanie Smooter, she has a less-than-elegant family in a small Alabama town, and, oh yeah, she's already married to her high school sweetheart (Josh Lucas)! Can she get a divorce in time to avoid having to tell anyone, or will her nosey future mother-in-law ruin everything?

What I love about this movie? Having lived in the South for a while, I appreciated the scenes where Mr. Smooter and company are re-enacting the Civil War. They really do have them down there, and sometimes the South even wins!

I enjoy the 'fish out of water' element of the New Yorkers visiting Alabama, and also the romance element centered around what lightning does to sand when it strikes. This one is a must-have for any beader's collection in my opinion ;)

Made of Honor (2008)

The story: Platonic best friends Tom (Patrick Dempsey) and Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) accept eachother the way they are. He's a serial dater whose bed hosts a new girl every night, and she's simply looking for Mr. Right. When Hannah takes an extended vacation to Scotland, Tom begins to realize what he's been missing in his relationships all this time....Hannah. When she comes home engaged to a Scottish Duke and asks Tom to be her 'maid' of honor, Tom accepts so that he can be close to Hannah to win her over. From New York for the bridal shower to Scotland for the wedding, Toms' comical attempts to appear 'mature' to Hannah are entertaining and endearing. Will Tom be able to win her back in time, or is he destined to lose her forever?

What I like about it? First of all, I just like wedding movies, and this one is set (partly) in Scotland with a sort of 'traditional' theme . What girl hasn't dreamed of marrying some version of royalty and living in a castle? And if attractive Scottish nobles isn't your thing,who doesn't want to marry Patrick Dempsey? Just sign me up!

The scenes in Scotland are beautiful, and the Highland Games are full of men in kilts, most of which I would take as a mate. (Yes, I bought my actual husband a kilt which he DOES wear, complete with boots that nearly reach the long kilt ;).

The comedy hits the mark each time, whether you're dealing with the evil would-be female Maid of Honor, or watching Patrick Dempsey attempt the Highland Games in a mini-kilt. All around a fun movie with a satisfying ending.

Turkey Dinner with Me, Myself, and I

This year, with my husband and best friend out of town for Thanksgiving, I opted to spend it alone in silent bliss. I made myself a turkey dinner, complete with all the trimmings, spent the day beading and glittering things, went out in the evening for a doorbuster sale or two (I got the Making Memories Embellishment Center at a stupid discount), and went to the shop to decorate a bit in preparation for Black Friday. No pics of the shop yet, but here's a pic of my dinner:

A customer came into the shop the other day. Being a new customer, I asked "How did you hear about us?" expecting to get the usual answer of "Google.", and she said " I saw your mention in Denver Magazine." First off, we had no clue that we were being mentioned at all. Secondly, we were part of the feature article naming "107 Exciting things to do in Denver". Woohoo! We were honored to be mentioned. Halloween and Other Stuff

Well, Halloween is over. I only dressed up once for the Rocky Mountain Bead Society costume party, and that was enough for me. Halloween is also my anniversary, but my hubby was out of town for work that weekend, so that was a no-go. I didn't even have any trick or treaters come to the door. Weird.

Jade's Necklace

When I came back from the Bead&Button Show this past June, I brought with me some fabulous vintage Swarovski Crystal cabochons, and graciously agreed to share some with the shop. They didn't last long. When Jade of 5280 Platinum Studios stopped by, she just had to have me make something with the Smoked Topaz rounded triangles, but what to make? We decided on stacking them as a centerpiece with a bit of beadweaving around them, and I set to turning the crystals into a pendant. The pendant has been done for a while, but the rest of the necklace wasn't really coming to me, so I let it sit and stew until I found the perfect accompanying pieces. Yesterday, I think I found a great combination that not only looks fabulous, but allows the centerpiece to shine. Here's what I've come up with:

I used an irridescent purple natural pearl, double-drilled shell spacer bars in purple, Swarovski Crystals in Amethyst and Smoked Topaz, and added antiqued copper daisy spacers and slightly tarnished copper balls. It still has a way to go (for one I need to figure out which clasp will work best), but I think I'm on the right track....what do you think?

In May of 2009 I participated in the Bead Unique Magazine Bead Swap. When I received the box of goodies from other beaders, I went to work and created 7 items to send to them. I was elated that October when I opened the Winter 2010 edition to find a little picture of one of my bracelets with my name beside it on the page describing the Bead Swap. In February of 2010, as I was opening the first storefront location of my bead store, I was contacted by Joanna Feller, Managing Editor of Bead Unique Magazine requesting the instructions for my Medallion Bracelet, stating that they had it in mind for their Winter 2011 issue (hitting newsstands in October 2010). I was both humbled and honored to even be asked. I quickly sent along the instructions for the bracelet, and waited.

A few months went by. I was asked for a few more sets of instructions, 2 of which I have sent along, and one which I have yet to get to (I'll get there I swear). I was beginning to give up hope on the winter issue when I received the fall issue, and near the back was a large teaser picture of my bracelet saying 'Coming in next issue'. Woohoo! Now I knew for sure that I would be in that issue! Yesssss!

So, without further adieu, I give you the Winter 2011 issue of Bead Unique Magazine, complete with my Medallion Bracelet article. The Worst Witch (1986)
The Story: Mildred Hubble is accepted into Miss Cackle's (Charlotte Rae)Academy for Witches based solely on being descended from a long-line of respectable Witches. Her potions making is terrible, her broomstick riding is attrocious, and she's the only girl in the school with a grey kitten. Daunted by a nasty fellow student bent on her demise, a head teacher (Diana Rigg)who simply hates her, and a band of wicked witches trying to take over the school, Mildred (Fairuza Balk) has to dig deep inside herself to save the day (and meet the Grand High Wizard (Tim Curry).

Why I like it: I admit, this is a favorite from my childhood. I wouldn't go trick-or-treating without seeing it. I love that Charlotte Rae plays both the head-mistress of the school Miss Cackle, and her wicked twin sister Aggie. Diana Rigg (with her fabulous cheekbones) portrays a very believeable mean teacher out to get the nice girl, but redeems herself a bit in the end. And if those aren't enough for you, it's totally worth seeing Tim Curry dance around in this hilarious solo where a green screen ( new technology for the time) was used to show not-so-scary Halloween scenes in the background while he sings about my favorite holiday. True, it's a show made for kids in the 80's, but I rather enjoy the cheesy graphics and the cute coming of age story; I hope you will too!

Practical Magic (1998)

Born into a legacy of witches with a dark history, Jillian (Nicole Kidman) and Sally Owens (Sandra Bullock) have never been 'normal'. Raised by their aunts after their parents' death, the sisters grew up in a household that was anything but typical--their aunts fed them chocolate cake for breakfast and taught them the uses of practical magic. But the invocation of the Owens' sorcery also carries a price--some call it a curse: the men they fall in love with are doomed to an untimely death. Now adult women with very different personalities, the quiet Sally and the fiery Gillian must use all of their powers to fight the family curse and a swarm of supernatural forces that threatens the lives of all the Owens women.

Why I like it: Beyond Sandra and Nicole's fabulous hair in this movie (yes, we know they're extensions, but that's hardly the point), I always enjoy a good love story, and Practical Magic delivers. I am a big fan of midnight Margaritas, and chocolate cake for breakfast if I can get it and, no I wouldn't mind very much if Aidan Quinn showed up at my doorstep bent on being my new love interest. Stockard Channing and Diane Wiest have long been favorites of mine, and they are laugh out loud hilarious in this movie at times. It has action, adventure, (needless to say) magic, and a few scenes with a hot undead guy...what more could you want for your Halloween viewing?

Update on THE Bag

I'll be the first to admit that I haven't been inspired to work on THE Bag in months. I remember sewing a few beads onto it at the Bead&Button Show, but that's about it. So I took a picture of what I had done in June shown here,

and actually got to work on it a bit last week. I'm really not that far from having this part of it done, but I have at least 4 more piece to go (nowhere near this large). Wish me luck!

Legally Blonde (2001)

The Story: Elle Woods (played by Reese, of course) has never had anyone expect more from her than to be a Victoria's Secret model. After being dumped by her long-term boyfriend in favor of a dull, brunette (He needed to marry a Jackie, not a Marilyn ;), she decides to get him back by attending Harvard Law along with him. To her, and everyone else's, surprise, she has more legal savvy than many of the hoity toity students at the school. She has her ups, she has her downs, she has her mini Chihuahua named Bruiser, and she's out to prove to everyone that blondes can be more than beautiful.

What I like about it: Firstly, I love Reese Witherspoon. Really love her. I love her bunny costume, I love her attitude, and, let's face it, I love her hair. I admit, this movie is a guilty pleasure of mine. I watch it when I need a little pick-me-up, or when I feel the need to see a dog in a costume. I even own it on VHS....shudder ;) I've always had a thing for Luke Wilson, who plays her eventual love interest, so that's a big plus for me. And I want a little Bruiser dog, really I do.

Vanity Fair (2004)

The Story: Rebecca Sharp's (played by Reese Witherspoon) father was and artist, and her mother a French opera singer. Being orphaned at a young age, she is forced to be a servant in a boarding school until coming of age. Armed with only her wits and obvious beauty, she decides to raise her lot in life as best she can starting a governess in a Squires' home. 'Described by some as 'Not merely a social climber, but a mountaineer', we watch the trials and tribulations of her launch into (and out of ) society.

My take: You know I love a period drama, and this one leaves no costume un-polished. Reese Witherspoon actually sings in this movie. She sings a beautiful rendition of 'Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal' which is certainly worth hearing. This film is directed by Mira Nair. Famous for her ability to capture the mood of a film impeccably, she adds in flavors of India in all the right places. There is even a dance number sung to a tune familiar to me (and most other bellydancers) with an Indian feel. Fleshing out the cast is James Purefoy as Rawdon Crawley, Gabriel Byrne as The Marquess of Steyne, Romola Garai as Amelia Sedley, and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the naughty George Osborne

We're coming up on my favorite time of the year....fall. The crispness of the air, the crunch of the leaves, the Halloween costumes, my Halloween wedding....all of it comes to mind when we have that first cool evening. The retail stores are teaming with spider webs and witches, pumpkins and bats, and I want them all. Glitter-covered skulls seem to be popular this year and I saw a lot of owls while I was out and aboutI am now creating crystal spider, and beaded witch earrings, and I have added one more item to my Halloween repertoir: Spider web ornaments! Here's a picture to give you a better idea of what I'm talking about. I may be offering it as a class at the shop next month, so keep an eye out ;)

Unspoiled Weekend

This past weekend, I hit the wall on my 80 hour weeks for the past few months. After doing a show on Saturday, I promptly melted onto my couch, where I pretty much stayed until Monday afternoon when I took my husband back to the airport. I barely worked on anything at all, shopped for a little polymer clay to use in some Halloween pieces, and read 300 pages into Twilight. I had popcorn, apricot toast, and a SlimJim and a pickle for dinner last night.....no kidding.

I haven't decompressed that much in months if not longer. At first it felt like I should be doing something, then my very wise husband says "Just sit here", so I did.

Here's a picture of the little table I had at the show, pretty much the only productive thing I did all weekend, for which I am proud.

Blog Challenge: Still a Disaster Area ;)

This past weekend, I had a chance to tackle a little bit of my beadroom... mainly the huge table in the center of the room. Now It's no secret that I'm not a clean crafter, but what had started out as "I know what's under that little pile there" became a giant mountain of shiny that required a topographical resource map to find anything. I'm pleased to say that it's coming along nicely and, with only a couple of weeks to go in the challenge, it couldn't have come soon enough. So here's what it looks like now...I can almost see the bottom of the pile...er, I mean....I can almost see the table!

Hopefully I'll be able to find some time in my busy schedule soon to clean a little bit more. Wish me luck ;)

Having had a very hectic past couple of months, I have neglected to write this column, so, without further adeiu, here it is!

Sense and Sensibility (1995)
With the recent death of their wealthy father, and the estate entailed away from the female line, the Dashwood girls must learn to fend for themselves in a world where money and status are everything. This version stars Emma Thompson as the sensible Elinor, and Kate Winslet as passionate Marianne (and let's not forget Alan Rickman as Col. Brandon). The costumes are beautiful, the people are beautiful, and I think this will always be my favorite.

Sense and Sensibility (2008)
Taking a small liberty with the book, the main cottage is located along a beautiful seaside. Although this version boasts less stars in the main cast than the 1995 version, you will recognize many of the supporting actors from other BBC films. Included are Mark Williams as Sir John Middleton , and the incomparable Linda Bassett as Mrs. Jennings.

That being said, I found the main cast very likeable and believable. Elinor being among my favorite characters of all time, I am very picky about the part, and I really liked Hattie Morahan (whom I was unfamiliar with up until this point) in the part. David Morrissey as Colonel Brandon took a bit of getting used to, but he grew on me.

Dropped off the Radar...

Sorry that I've dropped off the radar the last few weeks everyone. I had some major deadlines to make for bead magazines, bead shows, show vending, and the list goes on.

New Creations

Jade, who owns 5280 Platinum Studios next door, has commissioned two pieces from me. The first is a pair of earrings to match the beautiful silver and gold bracelet that her husband bought her for their anniversary, and the second is a necklace that hasn't even begun to make its way to fruition yet.
So we'll start with the earrings: First I made a short version which I really do love in all antiqued silver.
The bracelet has the CZ's surrounded by a gold bezel, so I decided to make the same earring in the same silver, only with a little gold bezel near the crystal so that they would match. That little change let to a much more bold earring as pictured here:
I love them! They are very sweepy and dangly, but they aren't heavy at all. I plan on keeping this style in my line-up. I haven't come up with a name yet.

Thus far, Gaslight Globes, Fun Globes, and Cats Eye Crystal have been suggested, along with Deux Jolies (which means two pretty in French). Any additions?

Two whole weeks are down in my challenge to create a cleaner, and slightly functioning bead room from the disaster area it had become.

I began by cleaning off a small space to put a bead mat on in the work station area, then proceeded to clean off the workstation table a bit at a time. This is what I came up with by the end of the first week and a half.

I know it doesn't look like much to your neater folk, but it's a big improvement over the old clutter. For one, I can actually bead at this station! Maybe I'll actually get some work done this week...crazy, I know, but you never know ;)

The Peacock Shop is 6 Months Old!

Many of you know that I own a bead shop called The Peacock Shop. My little bead shop has grown from a corner of my livingroom, to its own bead room,to a kiosk in a bitty mall, to its current incarnation (and first storefront location) a 170 sq.ft. shop. My goal is to continue growing incrimentally until I have a mini Beadlush (a wonderful bead shop that I used to work at, located in Charlotte,NC. Stop by to see Lydia, Vanessa, and the girls if you're ever in town;). Eventually I would like my shop to occupy around 1500-2000 sq ft, but I've got a long way to go!

What am I doing to ensure survival? you ask....On top of working my 45 hour week as the sole (yet unpaid) employee of the shop, and lone teacher of classes both public and private. I often wander home at the end of the day and continue working (bagging, tubing, pricing, searching for the next cool thing) until it's time for me to pass out, and do it all over again. My 'days off' are spent taking pictures to list on one of my Etsy sites (Gypsybeads and ThePeacockShop, if you're interested), testing class 'ideas', and sometimes teaching private lessons. I blog, I Tweet, I update my shop's Facebook Page a couple times a day most 'working' days. I host Crafternoons, I teach at bead shows, as well as the shop, and sell my jewelry in person at shows both night and day. In my 'spare' time I come up with new ideas for classes and kits, and teach private lessons. Recently I've been working with Bead Unique Magazine in the hopes of getting some of my work published more nationally.

For those of you who are wondering: Yes, I am married, Yes, I do make time to 'be married', and Yes, I am exhausted most of the time....but I'm hoping it will pay off in the end :)

How do I do it? With the world's most fantastic support group, of course! From my best friend Shannon who gives advice both personal and professional, and is always ready with a Margarita, to my husband who seems to understand when I need to just run with something, and not be bothered, to my wonderful beaders and crafters who purchase things from my brick and mortar and online shops, and let me know what they want the next 'big thing' to be, I thank you all! I really couldn't have done it without you.

So here's to the first 'real' 6 months...May there be many more to come!

Blog Challenge: 12 weeks to a cleaner Beadroom!

Yes, you read it right....BEAD room. Two years ago, when my husband and I were looking for a house, my one stipulation was that it had to have a BEAD room (for those of you who are wondering, HIS stipulation was that it had to have a place to build a PUB.;)
So, we found a house, we moved in....I found the perfect French Blue and Frosty White to paint my Beadroom. I painted it, my husband laid hardwood floor, and I moved in a little table and chair. For my birthday a month later my husband hand-built a beautiful bookcase,

large bead table with storage cubes,

and a work station, complete with shelves in what used to be the closet.

Within two weeks, I had the vast majority of my crafty stuff moved in. Within a couple of months, the room looked like.....we'll just call it Creatively Cluttered ;).

Three or Four months later, I 'noticed' the clutter, and decided that I was trying to fit too many crafts into one room, so I took over a small room in the basement as my 'sewing' room to keep all of my fabric and sewing notions (I have yet to sew there...) . The clutter stayed about the same for the next few months with one little space cleared off on the counter of my workstation for me to work at, and a space at the table that stayed relatively clear....then I opened the kiosk...and then the bead shop....and then product for the new shop took over, and the little spaces I had cleared off suddenly became pricing stations.

When I needed somewhere to bead, I found a tray, and retreated to the couch....whether my husband was there to keep me company or not. It's gone on like that for months now, and I started to wonder why I had a bead room that I can't bead in. Why am I digging for the Modge Podge every time I use it when that I use it often? Why are my old cd's in easy reach (they're already on my IPod), and my soldering iron is on the other side of the room? The solution? Organize and clean!

I'm giving myself 12 weeks, starting now, to get my room into some semblance of a working order. Why 12 weeks? I have no clue. It seemed like a nice round number that was a little down the road so that I can pretend that I'm going to get something done.;) Now, notice that the title of this post is a 'cleaner' Beadroom, not a CLEAN one, so don't expect the room to shine like the top of the Sears Tower, but anything is a start at this point... B&B Last Days

On Friday, I got up to help my friend Suzanne at her booth A Grain of Sand. I worked a couple of hours, then took Crystal Elements II. Afterwards I went back to work, getting off an hour before the show closed to shop a bit. Saturday, was my main shopping day, so I got up really early, and was at the show doors when they opened..... I'm lying. I got up at the crack of 10 or 11am, took my time and a shower, and wandered over there around noon-ish. I made a mad dash through the first row ( I love lampwork, but wasn't in the market just then :), and then started buying in the second. My picks:

True Red Shell Pearls: I saw the shell pearls for the first time last year, and didn't pick any up so that I could see how well the coating lasted.

Turquoise Magnesite Skulls: I bought these in both Turquoise and regular cream magnesite. I loved the shape of them. They were very Dia de los Muertos :) I might put little crystals in some of the eyes....not sure yet.

Ammonite Pairs: Laura McCabe put some nautilus components in her Primitive Origins piece, and I've been on the lookout for such neat items. I bought one for myself last year, and thought I would bring some home for you all!

Is that everything I bought? No, but it really was too much to post here. After their debut last Tuesday, a lot of you stopped by to buy beads, and I thank you for it :) Still a bunch left for those of you who are still considering it ;) You can find them in store only at The Peacock Shop. I'll see you there!

B&B Second Class and Shopping Preview Night

Thursday, Shannon and I took our all day class Hoity Toity. The instructor, Shelley Nybakke, was very warm and amusing, and the project was stunning.

This is what the finished project is supposed to look like:

And Shannon and I got about one and 3/4" of one of the double-sided wheels done. Step 7 or 8 said " And make 15 more of these", or something of that kind....needless to say, we didn't finish the project in class ;) Here is a close-up of the front and back of one of the wheels I did finish.

Thursday is the night when the show floor is open to show attendees only (meaning those who registered for a badge and classes) for a limited number of hours in the evening before it opens to the paying public on Friday. It's sort of a prestigious thing to go because you feel special with your 'badge' and all.

The show floor is huge, and there are everything from seedbead vendors to purveyors of vintage crystal, and everything in between. We showed up a fashionably late so that we didn't have to wait in line, and the floor was packed by the time we got there. Here are the first things I picked up that night.

It was a little tough to get in to the booths, and Shannon and I were hungry after Hoity Toity, so we cut out a little early to the Applebees, only to wait an hour to get the wrong meal. After a talk with the manager, we walked down to an Italian restaurant to eat before we passed out for the day.

B&B Wednesday Download

On Wednesday, I took the Photo Pendants Under Glass Class with Susan Wade. I was having a hard time at first trying to figure out what was wrong with my technique, until Sue came around and proclaimed that it was my soldering tool, not the technique. She switched me to an extra one of her soldering irons, and the effect was like night and day. I made 3 pieces by the end, and was reasonably happy with the outcome. I left the class with the feeling that I had accomplished something, and took away skills that I can build upon.

After a filling dinner at Benihanas, Shannon and I lugged our bags over to the Meet the Teacher's extravaganza where we oogled the wares that teachers were offering, and managed to get a picture of me standing next to the Guinness Book of World Records record-holder for the longest necklace.

As shown in the picture, they really did make a big pop-up necklace bust to hang it on. It made me smile :)

More later on the first day of shopping, more classes, and even a picture of Dustin's Missile ;)

We have arrived!

We have arrived in Milwaukee, WI at the Bead&Button Show. Our flight was uneventful as it were, despite the attempts by Blucifer (the scary Denver International Airport icon), and

Anubis, Egyptian God of the Dead to thwart us. We ate late at the Millertime Pub, and are now heading to bed for a good night's sleep before a full day of beading. Night all!

It's coming down to the wire now! The Bead&Button Show starts tomorrow (for me), and several of my friends are already there and taking classes this week. My friend Shannon and I will be joined by THE Dustin Wedekind (he's kind of a big deal ;) this year. Dustin is looking to promote his kit lines in bead shops across the nation, so if you know anyone who owns one and is looking for a neat suplemental product line, let them know!

I promised a few friends who weren't able to make it this year to try to take pics and post during my week, so I'll do my best to get you some up-to-date updates on what I've seen, what classes I've taken, and what I'm bringing back to the shop for you. I've toyed with the idea of a scavenger hunt, but that means I would have to write one, so we'll see what I come up with in time, if anything at all.

We meet in a warehouse full of OttLights so that our shiny things are even shinier, or in fields full of sunlight so that our shiny things sparkle to their best advantage.

We have a not-so-secret following that covets our shiny things including Bellydancers (of all varieties), Renaissance Faire attendees, Las Vegas Showgirls, Burlesque Dancers, and other Magpies, and we love you :)

Cranford (2007)

You know that I can't resist a period drama, and Cranford is no exception From Julia McKenzie to Dame Judi Dench to Imelda Staunton, this BBC series is by no means lacking in fantastic Brittish Actors and Actresses.

Adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell's novels, Cranford gives us a glimpse of the lives of women living in a small town in 1842. Spinster sisters Deborah and Matilda (played by Eileen Atkins and Judi Dench) are, and always have been the height of modesty and decorum in the little town of Cranford, until some younger persons move into the town to shake things up a bit! Will someone end up with the handsome young doctor who has moved to town? Shall one of the hopeless spinsters receive an offer of marriage? Love to 'watch from behind the curtains' as life ticks on in a tiny town in the 19th century? Try Larkrise to Candleford Season 1. Adapted from an autobiographical novel by Flora Thompson, Larkrise to Candleford follows Laura Timmons (played by Olivia Hallinan) a young girl who moves from her sleepy and safe life in Larkrise to the comparatively burgeoning town of Candleford 8 miles away to pursue an apprenticeship with the postmistress. Excited yet wary of her new surroundings, we watch as she fumbles, grows, and perhaps falls in love with Candleford (and people in it?). From the excessively pious postman, to the extrememly independant for the time-period post mistress (hot, relaxing baths are her ONE weakeness....among other things;), this story has no end of amusing characters to choose from.

Larkrise to Candleford Season 1 is a 10 episode series, around and hour a piece. Might last you the whole week, or one long weekend....you never know ;)

Beadpunk Skeleton Key

Last night, on my trip home from the shop, I hit some traffic. While sitting in that traffic, I had an idea to us a component that I had been working on for another project as the top of a Skeleton Key. Once I got home, ate, and settled in, this is what I came up! I'm still working out the pattern, but I think it may be a class.

I also thought about how I could use a few other components that I make to work into other Beadpunk designs....I'll let you know what I come up with. :)

4 Stones, 3 Beetles, and Half a Worm....

Today I decided to get out into the back yard and clear some area for my garden this year. Having intended to start a garden every year for the past 10 years, and never having made it, just having cleared out the area was a big accomplishment :) During my labor, I found 4 stones, 3 black beetles, and half a work (sorry worm :( ). They grow back right?

So here's a picture of my own little plot of land. I don't know what I'm going to plant in it yet. Perhaps tomatoes, zucchini, maybe some bell peppers, and then some herbs like basil and oregano. Any suggestions for someone who hasn't had a garden since childhood (and, let's face it, mom did most of the work;) ? I'll keep you updated as the garden progresses :)

Great Movies to Bead by....

I spend a lot of time beading 'alone' in my bead room with my trusty computer, and I watch a lot of movies that I've seen a million times (you know, the ones that you don't actually have to look at the screen for because you know them by heart?) I love to see movies that have great jewelry, romance, drama, costuming, or all of the above.

This month, I have chosen an action flick: Gladiator (2000)

Not your normal 'female' fare, but the storyline is enticing (not to mention the scantilly clad men in the story), and the costuming and ornamentation are beautiful. Keep an eye out for the fashion on Lucilla (played by Connie Nielsen), the Emperor's sister, as she has some fabulous jewelry and hair ornamentation (who knew that you could look that fabulous with just a bit of ribbon in your hair?), and for the scene-stealing performances by both Russell Crowe, and Joaquin Phoenix. This storyline deals with issues such as incest and patricide, and does have its bloody moments in combat, and is rated R

Like the idea of Gladiator, but think the men are wearing too much clothing?
Try 300 (2007)
In all seriousness, this is a wonderful film that shows skill and comraderie above all. Keep an eye out for Queen Gorgo (played by Lena Headey) who has a wonderful sense of fasion, and embodies the ideal of a strong, independant woman. This movie can get a bit racey and bloody at times (it is rated R), so keep that in mind.

Check out Meet the Spartans (2008)

This is a spoof on 300 which stars a couple of well-built, attractive men (ie, Sean Maguire, and Kevin Sorbo), and a lot of their paunchy comrades with jokingly obvious air-brushed abs, as they take on the Persian hoard. This movie is rated PG13 for some hilarious sexual content, and crude language.

Postal Rant

Bear with me here. So last week, a customer of mine purchases an item of small value. She pays very adequately for the shipping, and I send it off. Thirteen days later, she contacts me to let me know that she hadn't received the item, so I call the U.S. Postal Service to see what the problem was (usually things only take 3 or 4 days to get to the other side of the country), and they tell me that First Class mail can take up to 14 days, so I should wait. I contact my cutomer, and let her know that if it doesn't show up by the next day, to let me know. She lets me know that it still hasn't shown up, so I get into my workshop this morning, and I make another of the item to send, I package it, and I decide that I'll send it via Delivery Confirmation to make sure that I can track it. I get to the post office, and I wait in line, and I'm told that I can't send it delivery confirmation because it's not 3/4" thick, but I can send it via Certified Mail where my client will likely have to traipse to their local post office to pick it up because they have to sign for it. I'm a little confused because I don't see why it matters whether it's 1/2" or 3/4" thick, so I mention this to the man who holds up a package in a pantomime of my stupidity to show me what 3/4" looks like. I am incensed at this point, needles to say. He continues that my other option is to send it Priority Mail which costs quite a bit more, but is more reliable. So I repackage the item into a Priority Mail envelope, and I go back up and get to the counter where I ask about tracking, and am told that there is no tracking on Priority Mail packages, that I'll have to add Delivery Confirmation....I kid you not. So I sent the damn package via Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation, and stalked out of the building. Needless to say, I am less than amused, and it's no wonder why they're losing business...after all, customer service is key in any face-to-face retail, and they lack it utterly. So, by the end of all this, I've spent nearly the price of the item in question in postage, and really, really hope that the item gets there, and my customer is happy. Anybody have any additions?

P.S. I feel the need to add this to clarify that this is the 10th+ issue that I've had with various post offices in the last month, and I understand that they're frustrated with their corporate practices, but so are the girl behind the counter at the bank, and the guy at the gas station, but at least I get a smile and a 'have a nice day' from them.

Chain Store Sadness...

So, I've been debating whether or not to order the new Pink Camo 'gun handled' tools for the shop. This is mainly due to the pricepoint which is higher than the 'normal' ones, but well worth it for the fabulous grip and quality, and still WELL under $20 (around $12 I think)....then I went to Michaels today to pick up a piece of scrap paper, and I decide to wander down the jewelry isle (most of it makes me sad really), and then I realize that they're selling pliers for $20, and they're so NOT worth it with they're wimpy plastic grips and lack of precision tip....guess I'll order those camo tools after all ;)

Great Movies to Bead by...

This month: Pride and Prejudice 1996 version starring Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. This movie has it all: from action to drama to romance to suspense (not to mention some fantabulous jewelry in the ballroom scenes mainly on Mr. Bingley's Sisters). And, no matter how many times I watch it, I still wonder whether Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy will end up together at the end. It is 3 discs long (around 6 hours), and is good at least once every couple of months for an extra long beading session.

Don't have time for an extra long beading session? Try the 2005 version starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen which is a more modest 2 hours. At first I had a hard time visualizing Keira as the buxom Elizabeth, but the alluring Matthew Macfadyen is such a fabulous Mr. Darcy, that one hardly notices after a few scenes.

Seen both movies, and want a bit of a change? You've got to see Lost in Austen (2008)!
Lost in Austen is a neo-historical remake of the movie where a modern-day fan of the Jane Austen book Pride&Prejudice accidentally crosses over into the books' fictional world and proceeds to muck things up between nearly every character in the book! Warning: this movie deals with a lot of 'modern day' issues that would not have worked 'back then' in the book such as the main character not being a 'pure maid' ( if you catch my drift), so don't watch if you're offended by this type of banter, or by movies that are generally rated PG.
